Derek had the opportunity to serve as one of the chaplains at the Athletes Village in Whistler during the 2010 Winter Olympics. He was part of a team of chaplains from all over the world who led Bible studies, met with athletes one-on-one, and ministered to people during the tragic death of Nodar, the luge athlete from the Republic of Georgia who was in a fatal accident the day of the Opening Ceremonies.
